How to make a fake text message
Making a realistic fake text screenshot takes about five steps. Here’s how to do it well — and how to keep it clearly fictional.
Whether it’s for a chat-story video, a class on media literacy, a UI mockup or a harmless joke, a convincing fake text comes down to two things: matching the app exactly, and getting the small details right. Here’s the process, step by step.
Realism is a craft, not a trick. The same details that make a mockup believable are the ones that, done wrong, give a fake away — so this doubles as a realism checklist.
Step by step
- Choose the platform and phone. Decide whether it is an iMessage, WhatsApp, Instagram DM or other chat, then pick the exact device so the status bar and frame match.
- Write the conversation. Add each message and set who sent it. Keep the back-and-forth natural — real chats have short, uneven turns, not perfect paragraphs.
- Set the believable details. Edit the contact name, the time and battery, and add delivery states (delivered, read, ticks) or a typing indicator. These small cues do the heavy lifting.
- Match the timing. Give messages timestamps that flow logically and add a date divider if the chat spans time. Chronology is the most common thing fakes get wrong.
- Export the screenshot. Download a PNG or copy it to your clipboard. On the free tier the export is watermarked, which keeps it clearly fictional.
The details that sell it
Most people notice the message text and forget everything around it. The believable cues are the status bar (a plausible time and battery), the delivery states (Delivered/Read on iMessage; grey vs blue ticks on WhatsApp), atyping indicator, and timestamps that flow in order. Get those right and even a short exchange reads as real.
Keep it clearly fictional
Our generators watermark every free export for a reason: a fake text is fine for creativity and terrible for deception. Don’t present a generated screenshot as a real message from a specific person, don’t use it to defraud or defame, and don’t strip the watermark to pass it off as genuine. Those uses are prohibited by our Acceptable Use policyand illegal in many places.

Pick a generator and try it — each one is free, runs in your browser, and exports in a click. The iMessage generator is the fastest place to start.
Frequently asked questions
What is the easiest way to make a fake text message?
Use a dedicated generator: pick the device, type the conversation, set the timestamps and delivery states, and export. Our iMessage and WhatsApp generators do this in a couple of minutes, free.
How do I make it look realistic?
Match the device, keep the timing logical, use natural short messages, and get the delivery states right (Delivered/Read, grey vs blue ticks). Our guide to spotting fakes is, in reverse, a checklist for realism.
Is it okay to make a fake text?
For parody, memes, education, design mockups and fiction — yes. Using a fake text to defraud, defame or impersonate a real person is not, and is illegal in many places. See our Ethics & Acceptable Use policy.
Can I remove the watermark?
The free export is watermarked on purpose, so casual output stays clearly fictional. A one-time $1.99 export or a subscription removes it for legitimate professional use under our terms.
